Tooling considers the tools which support the use, update and management of the content of SNOMED CT.

One of the key early requirements for success of IHTSDO is to improve its technology platform to meet the evolving needs of the organization and its Members. IHTSDO’s Technical Committee and Chief Technical Architect lead programs with this goal in mind.

In 2009, we introduced the SNOMED CT Modular Workbench, building on the Roadmap and Architecture developed by the Technical Committee, as well as detailed specifications developed by individual Working Groups and members of the Community of Practice. The IHTSDO Workbench includes a set of tools that will form the foundation of a multi-lingual modular workbench. The IHTSDO Workbench includes a set of tools that allow users to author terminology, map terminology to other code sets, undertake workflow and process automation, search/browse terminology and classify terminology (enabling reasoning over the SNOMED CT terminology). Workbench users can work independently or can collaborate on terminology editing, management or other tasks.

The Workbench was launched in early 2009. Support arrangements were put in place and education sessions initiated. IHTSDO intends to add additional modules to the Workbench over time and to encourage partners to build and share complementary tools. For example, projects to enhance the Workbench’s capabilities with respect to refset maintenance and translation, a classification integration initiative, planning for migration of the International Release to the Workbench, and other work are all in progress. More work on these initiatives will be required in 2010 and beyond.

In December 2009, IHTSDO made the source code for the IHTSDO Workbench freely available under an Apache2 open source agreement. A number of seats on the collaborative web-based environment used to host the Workbench were also made available free of charge to open source developers. This means that organizations from around the world can use the same tools to maintain their terminologies and coding systems, leveraging the investment that IHTSDO and its Members have made.
