2009 Update

National Activities  

UK Edition specific editorial principles are in development under the auspices of the UKTC Edition Committee. These are complimentary to those internationally published and include detail on the representation of formal scored assessments, activities of daily living and administrative concepts.

 

The UK have been working with the European Renal Exchange and the International Society for Nomenclature of Paediatric and Congenital Heart Disease to develop additional SNOMED CT content, produce subsets and assist with mappings in these areas.

 

Plans for the introduction of the IHTSDO workbench tooling have been continuing apace with the reference set development functionality being the initial priority.

 

Work is underway to introduce SNOMED CT into the teaching of undergraduate and Masters clinical education.

Introductory on-line educational resources have been developed and further modules are planned for 2010. An overview brochure on SNOMED CT has been produced and circulated following requests to other member countries.

 

Efforts to re-establish a WHO Family of International Classifications Collaborating Centre in the UK are continuing

 

Implementation Plans/Activities

 

  • Assessment of derivation of secondary uses information from point of care clinical information as part of the ‘end-to-end’ datasets process
  • Delivery of formal assessment scales implementation guidance
  • Establishment of methods to remove barriers to implementation in primary care, such as inter-terminology mapping tables

Affiliate activities

The following is an indication of affiliate activity in the UK:

  • Over 1 Million SNOMED CT encoded patient summaries created from GP system (Read code) records
  • National roll out of out-patient service finding subsets into the Choose and Book service supporting as many as 35,000 bookings in a single day
  • Over 2 million prescriptions are transmitted every day with the drug concepts represented by SNOMED CT identifiers
  • SNOMED CT subset in a community health intervention module introduced into several NHS organisations in the North of England
