New Zealand Ministry of Health Representatives
New Zealand is represented on the IHTSDO® by the Ministry of Health.
The Ministry of Health is responsible for ensuring the health and disability system works for New Zealanders. It is the Government's primary advisor on health policy and disability support services and is responsible for:
- policy advice on improving health outcomes, reducing inequalities, and increasing participation
- acting as the Minister’s agent
- monitoring the performance of District Health Boards, and other health sector Crown entities
- implementing, administering and enforcing relevant legislation and regulations
- providing health information and processing payments
- facilitating collaboration and coordination within and across sectors
- nationwide planning and maintenance of service frameworks
- planning and funding public health, disability support services and other service areas that are retained centrally
Within the Ministry of Health, work related to the IHTSDO® and SNOMED CT® has been assigned to the New Zealand Health Information Service (NZHIS).
NZHIS is a group within the Ministry of Health responsible for the collection and dissemination of health-related data. NZHIS has as its foundation the goal of making accurate information readily available and accessible in a timely manner throughout the health sector to support the sector's ongoing effort to improve the health status of New Zealanders. Effective and timely use of information is crucial to achieving this vision which is aligned with the Health Information Strategy for New Zealand (HIS-NZ) and is available at:

In particular, NZHIS has responsibility for:
- collection, processing, maintenance, and dissemination of health data, health statistics and health information;
- the ongoing quality improvement of data entering the national health information systems;
- the continuing maintenance and development of the national health and disability information systems;
- the provision of appropriate databases, systems and information products;
- the development and provision of health and disability information standards and quality-audit programmes for data;
- co-ordination of ongoing national health and disability information collections and proposals for their development; and
- analysis of health information, performance monitoring, benchmarking, and advice on the use of information obtained from NZHIS.
