2010 Update

Member's update

In 2010, a national project team worked on creating further awareness of SNOMED CT and introducing SNOMED CT in the Netherlands. Members of this project team are representatives of the National IT Institute for Healthcare (Nictiz), the department of Medical Informatics at the University of Amsterdam and the Royal Dutch Association for the Advancement of Pharmacy.

National activities

Over the last twelve months, the project team focused on creating further awareness on the significance of "unity of language". Eight introduction courses were organized. The participants included health professionals and IT professionals, as well as vendors and administrators. Also, a conference was organized to highlight the different aspects of "unity of language" and the use of SNOMED CT. The conference focused on local, national and international aspects.

Implementation plans / activities

The following activities took place in 2010:

-      A prototype terminology server was developed. Possibilities on usage
and usability of this terminology server were further scrutinized.
-      Awareness activities, introduction courses, expert courses and a conference
-      Development of first versions of datasets and subsets in collaboration with
       medical professional organizations
-      Become acquainted with possible useful tooling for SNOMED CT and getting
IT vendors more involved in this process.

At this moment, the Netherlands do not have the ambition to translate SNOMED CT concepts. The idea is that the translation of concepts will follow a stepwise implementation approach that is used in the Netherlands.

Affiliate activities

21 organizations have obtained a SNOMED CT license. Many of them are exploring the possibilities of SNOMED CT.
