2009 Update
Member’s update
In 2009, a national project team worked on creating awareness of SNOMED CT and making it available in the Netherlands. Members of this project team are representatives of the National IT Institute for Healthcare (Nictiz), the department of Medical Informatics at the University of Amsterdam and the Royal Dutch Association for the Advancement of Pharmacy.
National activities
Over the last twelve months, the project team focused on creating awareness on the significance of ‘unity of language’. An important aspect was to provide knowledge on SNOMED CT and the use of medical terminology. Eight introduction courses were organized. The participants included health professionals and IT professionals, as well as vendors and administrators. Also, a conference was organized to highlight the different aspects of ‘unity of language’ and the use of SNOMED CT. In January 2009 the national release centre has been launched.
Implementation plans / activities
In three pilots the use of SNOMED CT in the Netherlands was evaluated. The results of these pilots are publicly available and form the input for further implementation strategies:
- The mapping of a Subset from a register of medical actions. The subset consists of 200 medical actions. One of the most important results from this pilot is the mapping process.
- The development of an allergy subset by ENT specialists for use in the entire hospital. The pilot includes the aspect of representation by Common User Interfaces.
- The use of SNOMED CT for the preoperative assessment.
In 2010 new pilots will be started.
At this moment, the Netherlands do not have the ambition to translate SNOMED CT concepts .The idea is that the translation of concepts will follow a stepwise implementation approach that is used in the Netherlands.
Affiliate activities
Fourteen organizations have obtained a SNOMED CT license. However, there is still little use of SNOMED CT. In 2010 the national activities will focus more on implementation. In pilots the use of SNOMED CT will be further explored and tooling for maintenance purposes will become available. More
