Denmark's Update April 2009
National activities
Digital Sundhed held four Workshops to provide information to health IT professionals about terminology, information model issues, and clinical guidelines. The presentations on our national and international projects focused on usability and sharing experiences. In collaboration with SORANO, Mediq and CareCom, we held two education sessions. We recently finalized a proof of concept (POC) on Archetypes, and the vendors concluded that they would prefer to use SNOMED CT on the archetypeelement level (attribute level). A POC on Map of Medicine will also take a closer look at the use of SNOMED CT.
Implementation plans and other activities
Digital Sundhed, the National Board of Health, and a broad circle of interested parties are currently working on a strategy for broadly implementing SNOMED CT in Denmark. During 2008, we finalized two major national projects:
1. The implementation of SNOMED CT in close cooperation between clinicians and a vendor for documenting physical examination status and history taking status in an Electronic Health Record. Essential outcomes involve clinical knowledge, information models, and knowledge of SNOMED CT, as well as the need for post-coordination.
2. The findings from an implementation project in Intensive Care Units have highlighted the underlying potential of using SNOMED CT codes in order to increase the quality of documentation, to potentially increase patient safety, and to ensure continuity in diagnosis-related group registration.
In the Danish Archetype POC project, we found that it is important to secure the correct understanding of the archetype by using classified terminology in several levels (elements and content by using subsets) in the archetype. SNOMED CT should be one of the preferred terminologies. Important parts of this report will be available in English on our website.
At the University of Aalborg, one study focused on post-coordination of SNOMED CT. Another PhD study is currently being set up to examine whether SNOMED CT is useful for nurses’ documentation, and how terminology can be accessible in a nurserelated context. At the University of Aarhus’s Knowledge Communication Lab, they use SNOMED CT to supply EHRs with layman terms.
