Summary of National Activities

The Canadian National Release Centre successfully processed a list of SNOMED CT requests for change as part of a pilot project. The request submission system is ramping up and Canada’s NRC is expecting to process a larger number of requests in 2010.

Education and training services are currently customizing education tutorial material to reflect the pan Canadian experience and enrich the experience of our students. Accessible education offerings such as eLearning and webcasts are also being developed for the convenience of our clients.

IHTSDO Canadian Constituents participate in a number of working groups, including Translation, Mapping, Implementation, etc.

Implementation plans/use cases/activities

An environmental scan within Canada based on stakeholder input has been conducted to learn how to move implementation forward in Canada.
A Canadian Terminology Vision was agreed upon
Canada developed tactical approaches as part of a longer term strategy to move SNOMED CT implementation forward in Canada by:

Identifying and developing guidance documents to make it easier for implementers (Example of topics covered include translation, subset, extension, workbench, clinical information groups)
Enhance knowledge management amongst implementers by supporting the sharing of information and lessons learned

In addition, Canada is planning to initiate a couple of demonstrator projects to drive strategic SNOMED CT implementation and operational plans

Number of Affiliate licensees / Affiliate Activities

A Palliative Care pilot project explored the creation of a palliative care terminology subset, a step-by-step SNOMED CT encoding methodology, and the perceived value of SNOMED CT to clinicians.
Cancer surgical synoptic reporting project: Templates were developed by tumor site and using SNOMED CT subsets
A national Cancer Staging initiative sponsored by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC) to enhance and implement Pathology Cancer Checklists across Canada.

Standards Collaborative Membership as of December 31^st, 2009:

· 89 Vendors/Consultants/Private Insurers (Corporate Membership)

· 21 Jurisdictions/Agencies (Corporate Membership)

· 17 Hospitals/Clinics/Networks (Corporate Membership)

· 23 Professional Colleges/Academic Institutions (Corporate Membership)

· 78 Individuals

Summary of translation plans/activities

The French Canadian Extension of SNOMED CT developed by Infoway from February 2008 to May 2009 (over 15 months), currently contains 35,220 current, active concepts.

The first translation phase completed on May 31, 2009 produced 32,531 translated concepts. This translation was based on the January 2008 Release of SNOMED CT. The selected concepts to be translated came from Jurisdictional implementation project priorities and a defined systematic translation approach (levels 2-5 of most hierarchies) to help the translators in their work. A team of about 27 people was involved in this Phase, for a budget of more than 2.5 million dollars.

A second, shorter phase of work was subsequently completed on Aug 10, 2009. This work was undertaken to update the translations so that they aligned with new content contained in the January 2009 release of SNOMED CT. During this phase 2,689 concepts were added to the French Canadian Extension. More
