SNOMED CT® was a joint development between the NHS in England and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) to develop an international clinical terminology.

The delivery of a standard clinical language for use across the world's health information systems is a significant step towards improving the quality and safety of healthcare.

The health terminology has been on quite a journey through the past 40 years and the SNOMED CT® intellectual property rights are now transferred from the CAP to the SNOMED SDO® in the formal creation of the IHTSDO®.
